Discouraged Vs Disappointed

Someone once told me it’s okay to get disappointed - but don’t get discouraged. They had just broken the news that someone else was selected for the job I had applied for. That’s a very impactful moment that many of you have surely felt too. So what did that mean? What’s the difference and why does it matter?

Temporary Vs Permanent

Advancing through levels of management is a forward path for most people. There are no guarantees and many variables in play along the way. You should expect this and prepare yourself beforehand for any outcome. (There’s also an old saying of be careful what you wish for, you might get it) That being said, after all of the anticipation of the selection process, it can be very disappointing when you get the call saying they selected someone else. And that’s okay. It’s perfectly normal to that way - for a little while. But if you’re truly committed to advance and do whatever it takes to improve your odds via feedback, further development, etc. then you know this is a temporary setback and you won’t let it discourage you from future opportunities.

Beginning Vs Ending

If you can, seek input from the selecting official as well as your supervisor and trusted colleagues. They can be a valuable outlet for you. Always remain professional and courteous when discussing the process. And be prepared to hear some candid feedback about you and how others see or perceive you. No one is doing you any favors by not giving honest assessments. These are not easy discussions for selecting officials either. Every opportunity can be a new beginning. None of them have to be the end.
